Local history
History Dock, search, clipboard recording, retention, and folders.
Local history is on by default. Captures, scrolling captures, and new pins are written asynchronously to a local folder. Pins restored from history are not written again. In Settings → General you can turn recording off, pause it, or change retention.
History Dock
Press Ctrl + Shift + H to show or hide it. Click a card to pin it again. If that history pin is already on the desktop, it is only brought to the front. Hovering a card shows a large preview that does not receive mouse events.
| Action | Notes |
|---|---|
| Ctrl + F | Opens search while the Dock is visible. Searches text records and images that have already been recognized |
| ↑ / W, ↓ / S | Page through items. Only thumbnails that fit the current screen are decoded |
| Card top-right | Delete appears on hover. Dock delete is immediate and cannot be undone |
| Bottom-right clear | Appears on hover. Clears all history items without closing pins already on the desktop |
| Tray “Clear history...” | Asks for confirmation |
New-format image history keeps the unflattened original and editable annotations, so a restored pin can still be edited with Space. Enabling the new format clears old-format records once.
Record clipboard
This option is off by default. When enabled, clipboard images and text are stored in local history. File lists and content written by Snipkap itself are skipped.
Retention and folders
| Item | Range |
|---|---|
| Retention | 1..365 days, default 7 |
| Max items | 1..10000, default 1024 |
| Windows default | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Snipkap\History |
| macOS default | ~/Library/Application Support/Snipkap/History |
Only an existing writable folder is accepted. Switching folders affects new records only. Old files stay where they were, and the Dock then reads the new folder.
Scripts and agents should use the CLI history commands instead of a fixed delay.
