Install and permissions

Windows and macOS install options, plus first-run permissions on macOS.

Windows 10 1607 and later

  1. For a standard install, download the Windows 64-bit installer and follow the wizard.
  2. If you do not want to install, download the portable build, keep it in a fixed folder, and run it directly.
  3. Normal capture and pinning do not need administrator rights. Writing to Program Files during install does.
  4. After the first launch, use the tray menu to turn on launch at startup if you want it.

The installer creates Start Menu and uninstall entries, and adds the install folder to the system PATH by default. Already-open terminals need to be restarted before the new PATH takes effect. The portable build does not write an install directory and does not change PATH, but shortcut settings still live in the current user registry.

macOS 12.3 and later

  1. Open the DMG, drag Snipkap into Applications, then launch it.
  2. When “Snipkap permissions” appears, turn on Screen Recording first, then Accessibility.
  3. Permission buttons show the current authorization status. Clicking them only opens the matching Privacy & Security pages. Status refreshes when you return to the app.
  4. If a permission is turned off later, open Permissions again from the menu bar.

Screen Recording is used to capture the display. Accessibility is used to recognize windows and controls, and to support Finder Smart Paste. Basic capture needs Screen Recording.

Suggested order on macOS

Enable Screen Recording first, then Accessibility. On some macOS versions, Screen Recording fully takes effect only after you restart Snipkap.
